Asian stocks fell, with the regional benchmark index paring its longest weekly winning streak since January. Japanese shares fell the most in six weeks ahead of the busiest week of earnings.
Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) lost 3.6 percent as the Japanese carmaker said it was outsold by General Motors Co. for the first time in six quarters. Advantest Corp. slumped 9.7 percent in Tokyo after the chip-equipment maker posted a wider-than-expected quarterly loss. BBMG Corp. and Shandong Chenming Paper Holdings Ltd. slid in Hong Kong and mainland trading after they were cited by the Chinese government in a list of companies that must curb capacity this year.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index lost 0.6 percent to 135.24 as of 7:07 p.m. in Tokyo, with about two stocks dropping for each that rose. The measure has gained 0.2 percent this week, heading for a five-week advance. U.S. data showed mixed clues as to when the Federal Reserve may taper stimulus.
he market is still trying to make sense of whether tapering is good or bad, and I think it will bring us good, but we are in this process of going up and down depending on daily moves, said Mikio Kumada, a Hong Kong-based global strategist for LGT Capital Partners. Among a few stocks that had negative returns in the quarter, Veeco Instruments (VECO) and Titan International (TWI) are also among the smaller positions in the portfolio. Titan, which declined 11.4% in the quarter and will be discussed later in this letter, is a relatively new stock in the portfolio and one that we added to as the share price declined.Among the stocks that we added to in the quarter were Atwood Oceanics (ATW) and Titan International (TWI).As mentioned above, Titan declined nearly 12% in the quarter and we added to the position as the stock weakened. As you may recall, we initiated the position in TWI in the fourth quarter of 2013 in the mid- teens. Despite our additional TWI purchases, we do not yet own a full position in the stock. However, we have plenty of capacity to take the stock to a normal full position, which is 3%, but this assumes the company earns the right to have more of your capital allocated to the position. The primary reason why TWI shares sold off recently is that the wheel and tire markets for large construction and mining equipment remain depressed. Investors had hoped that the off-road, large construction equipment and mining business would see some acceleration after the very cold winter season, but that does not appear to be the case. Tire inventory levels for large, off-road equipment were too high for dealers to be aggressive and purchase tires en masse earlier this year. However, there is some recent evidence that much of the excess tire inventory has been reduced to levels that now support some restocking. Our investment thesis for TWI is not predicated on the wheel and tire market for large, off-road equipment to come roaring back to levels experienced before the financial crisis. Rather we believe the assets TWI has accumulated over the past decade can be managed more efficiently and, therefore, profit margins can improve without a huge increase in revenues. We recently visited one of TWI Midwest tire facilities a

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe Dow Jones news ticker in Times Square, New York City. NEW YORK -- Investment bank Goldman Sachs Group (GS), credit-card company Visa (V), and footwear Nike (NKE) will join the blue chip Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) Dow Jones industrial average, the index managers said Tuesday, in the biggest shake-up for the 30-stock average in nearly a decade. The three companies will replace Bank of America (BAC), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Alcoa (AA), all lower-priced stocks that exert a lesser pull on the price-weighted index. The changes will be effective on Sept. 23, S&P Dow Jones Indices said in a statement. The average, first established in 1896, includes 30 stocks, but very little money is indexed to its performance, unlike the broader Standard & Poor's 500 (^GSPC) or other indexes. In addition, because it is weighted by price, companies that are smaller in value with higher prices have more influence on the average. "Wow, those are big changes," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, N.Y. "The Dow is really an antiquated index. It is price-weighted, which makes no sense. But there are still are some people that pay attention to it, and some technicians, so it has an influence on some people." Google (GOOG) and other names were considered for inclusion but passed over because of high stock prices, David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the S&P Index Committee, told CNBC. The index manager said the changes were prompted by the low stock price of the three companies slated for removal and a desire to diversify the make-up of the index. Alcoa, in particular, has been seen as a candidate for elimination for some time, as the stock's market value of $8.5 billion is easily the lowest in the average. It is the first three-for-three change to the index since April 8, 2004, when American International Group (AIG), Pfizer (PFE) and Verizon (VZ) replaced AT&

The Dow’s comeback–if erasing a 0.4% drop can be called a comeback–was especially impressive considering that the four highest-priced stocks, and the ones with the biggest weights in the index, finished in the red. Visa (V) fell 0.6% to $220.55–perhaps a side-effect of this American Express (AXP) upgrade?–while Goldman Sachs (GS) fell 0.6% to $161 after naming a third co-head to its securities division, and 3M (MMM) declined 0.5% at $129.70. International Business Machines (IBM) dipped 0.1% to $177.14.

It's fun to be right, particularly when it has to do with stock-picking. Sometimes though, being right can be a real pain in the @#$%. Case in point? U.S. Geothermal Inc. (NYSEMKT:HTM). It was only two days ago that yours truly deemed HTM was a good-looking "buy" for true long-termers. Then today happens... a 27% rally that should have wise investors - even those who stepped into U.S. Geothermal with a long-term mindset - at least thinking about locking in their profits and walking away with a quick score. After all, you can always buy HTM back later.
- [By Bryan Murphy]
By most accounts, it's an all-American dream come true. U.S. Geothermal Inc. (NYSEMKT:HTM), working hard - for years - to make something out of nothing can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. HTM has swung to a profit, and is strong enough now that it's probably going to remain in the black in perpetuity. Shareholders who got into U.S. Geothermal anytime during or after 2012 have finally been handsomely rewarded, with most of that reward materializing in just the past three weeks. Regardless of when an investor got into a position in HTM though, there's just one thing left to do at this point.... get out. Lock in your gain and walk away, at least for a little while.
- [By John Udovich]
In addition, there are some other good articles (U.S. Geothermal: When Opportunity Knocks.... (HTM)and U.S. Geothermal is a "Buy"... For the Right Kind of Investor (HTM)) about U.S. Geothermal Inc that were just published on our site. So I won recover the same territory and there appears to be no news to explain yesterday jump.
