Canadian National Railway (CNR.TO) engages in transportation of goods including petroleum and chemicals, grain and fertilizers, coal, metals and minerals, forest products, intermodal, and automotive products. The company operates 20,100 route miles of track that spans Canada adn mid-America connecting the three coasts of Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico. Norfolk Southern (NSC) engages in rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate and finished goods operating approximately 20,000 router miles across the southern and eastern US. It has been a great year for Q4 Systems (NASDAQ: QFOR) and its shareholders. Although it is a small cap firm in the information technology sector, clients of Q4 Systems have included such blue chips as Alcoa, Wal-Mart, and Walgreens, among many others.

A previous article on Benzinga, "A Small Cap That is Cashing in on ObamaCare," detailed why Q4 Systems would do well as a result of the Affordable Care Act, or ObamaCare.

With the stock price up more than 500 percent for the last year of market action, that has clearly happened. Revenues are increasing by 40 percent on a quarterly basis, according to Yahoo Finance. Unlike many small caps, Q4 Systems posts a gross profit, has hundreds of employees, operates in several companies, and as a high retention rate for clients. As a result, while it is now trading at under $1, two of the most recent analyst recommendations have Q4 Systems at $5.25 a share and $7.00 a share.

For a bit of context, competitor Trulia (NYSE: TRLA  ) is in negotiations to buy Market Leader (NASDAQ: LEDR  ) for $355million. Market Leader is a smaller (and growing) business that's similar to both Zillow and Trulia. Since Market Leader is still earnings negative, we can't compare it on a P/FCF basis, but we can look at other metrics. For one, Market Leader trades at a still-ridiculous-but-slightly less-so 57.2 times forward earnings. It trades at 6.4 times last year's sales. Zillow trades at 16.4 times last year's sales. Management expects sales to hit (on the high end) $182 million -- that implies a price of 10.55 times forward sales. If they double a year or two after, which would be unbelievably phenomenal, it would trade at 5.3 times sales.

The electric vehicle industry and stocks like Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), Kandi Technologies Group Inc (NASDAQ: KNDI) and Green Automo! tive Co (OTCMKTS: GACR) continue to produce a steady flow of interesting and relevant news for investors and traders alike with the following news being worth paying close attention to:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Prior to today, competitors (yet frenemies) like Kandi Technologies Group Inc. (NASDAQ:KNDI) and Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) could only wonder what kind of traction that electric vehicle maker Green Automotive Co. TSLA and KNDI don't have to wait any longer, however, as GACR put it all out there today. While it might be overdoing it to say Kandi Technologies or Tesla should be worried about the kinds of results - and the kind of growth - Green Automotive is getting, it wouldn't be inaccurate to say GACR's numbers are something the rest of the EV industry should take note of.... this little player is coming on strong.

Yesterday, small cap geothermal stock U.S. Geothermal Inc (NYSEMKT: HTM) produced a geyser of a return when it surged 26.79%, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock verses the performance of other geothermal stocks like small cap Ormat Technologies, Inc (NYSE: ORA) and mid cap Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN).First of all, I should mention there are some other geothermal stocks out there like Alterra Power Corp (CVE: AXY) and Ram Power Corp (TSE: RPG) who have their primary listing on Canadian exchanges with secondary ones on the OTC meaning they may not be a good deal for American investors or easy to invest in. Second, U.S. Geothermal Inc itself is a good geothermal proxy as itsfocused on developing, own! ing, and operating clean, sustainable electric power from geothermal energy resources and itsoperating geothermal power projects at Neal Hot Springs, Oregon; San Emidio, Nevada; and Raft River, Idaho plus El Ceibillo, an advanced stage, geothermal p rospect located within a 24,710 acre energy rights concession area near Guatemala City, the largest city in Central America.

Why Phillips 66 Earnings Will Start Shrinking

Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) will release its quarterly report on Wednesday, and ever since its initial spin-off from ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , favorable trends in the refining industry have helped to boost the company's profits and send the refiner's stock soaring. But lately, those trends have started to reverse, and the impact on Phillips 66 earnings could be a nasty surprise to those who've gotten used to the shares only moving in one direction.

In particular, Phillips 66 has seen huge benefits from the massive expansion in domestic energy production in recent years, as prices of domestic crude fell well below prevailing prices on the world markets. Yet as those spreads have shrunk to nearly nothing in recent quarters, Phillips 66 will now have to deal with a much more neutral earnings environment even as some other challenges begin to rear up and affect its earnings potential. Let's take an early look at what's been happening with Phillips 66 over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report.

Is the growth story for Phillips 66 earnings dead?
Analysts have dramatically reined in their views on Phillips 66 earnings over the past several months, cutting their June-quarter estimates by nearly 20% and lopping more than $0.50 per share from their full-year 2013 consensus earnings figures. The stock has stopped its upward move, falling about 4% since late April.

One of the biggest drivers of earnings growth for Phillips 66 and its peers came from cheap U.S. oil. Even as their input costs stayed low, refiners benefited from high prices for refined products like gasoline and diesel fuel, and that helped create massive profits. That led refiners to take extraordinary steps to obtain cheap crude from hard-to-reach domestic sources, including Phillips 66's decision to transport oil by rail to its refineries.

Lately, though, domestic crude has seen its cost advantage almost disappear, creating a potential reversal of the profit bonanza. Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) said last week that it expects discounts for domestic crude to return, restoring its long-term benefits, but in the meantime, its profits dropped 44% in its second-quarter report compared to year-ago levels.

But having learned a lesson from its parent, Phillips 66 recently had great success doing a spin-off of its own, putting many of its pipeline and terminal assets into the master limited partnership Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP  ) and seeing the shares of the newly public MLP soar on their IPO day. The move has worked so well in the industry that other refiners like Valero have made plans to put their own midstream assets into MLPs in order to help investors take advantage of tax benefits that the entities enjoy compared to regular corporations.

In the Phillips 66 earnings report, watch for signs about its expectations for spreads between domestic and global oil prices. If it projects further weakening, then it could be a while before profits return to past levels. Moreover, keep an eye on the regulatory front to see if pollution-reducing proposals will actually get implemented, potentially costing the refiner billions in capital expenses.

Even if refiners are on their way out, you can still profit from great ways to capitalize on high oil prices. Find some in The Motley Fool's "3 Stocks for $100 Oil". For FREE access to this special report, simply click here now.

Best Airline Stocks For 2014

As last year drew to a close, I reviewed the stock of Alaska Air Group, (NYSE: ALK  ) , and determined that it had room to climb in 2014. So far, so good; through the first quarter of this year, the stock has gained roughly 29%. Is the Seattle-based airline, one of the most efficient U.S. major carriers, getting ahead of itself?

The short answer to this question would appear to be no. While 29% is a precocious gain for just a handful of months, and though I'd love to take credit for a brilliant stock pick, the Dow Jones U.S. Airlines Index, which posted a brute gain of 86% last year, is up another 28% year to date. It's entirely possible that Alaska Airlines is getting bid up in the larger demand for airline stocks. Let's peel the aviation onion back a bit to get a closer read on Alaska's prospects for the rest of this year.

Earnings and valuation continue to look attractive
Alaska Airlines continues to impress investors with each earnings report. In its most recent filing for Q4 2013, the company reported record earnings of $78 million, a 68% increase over the prior year's quarter. The positive earnings were driven primarily by a 7% increase in revenue. When a company can increase earnings so significantly, it can offset a rise in the stock in terms of relative valuation, and we see this phenomenon at work with Alaska Airlines. When we reviewed the company's stock in November, ALK traded at 11.3 times trailing 12-month earnings. Since then, even after its price appreciation of more than one-fourth of its value, the airline's P/E ratio has remained in the same ballpark, at 13.0. This compares favorably to the peer group we previously compared ALK to. Currently, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) trades at 22.5 trailing 12-month earnings, and the P/E ratios of the rest of the group are as follows:Spirit Airlines-- 25.3,Republic Airways Holdings-- 19.1, andJetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) -- 17.6. Thus, relative to its competitors, Alaska still looks cheap.

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Australian stocks lost hold of early gains Monday. Retailer shares traded mostly weaker, but an advance for miners limited the losses after many base-metals futures rose on the back of better-than-expected U.S. jobs data. I a big believer in Latin America. While it has its troubles like every other emerging market, I continue to view its growing middle class with envy. The U.S. was never more secure economically than when its middle class was growing, so history has demonstrated what this can do for a country.

The airline industry has a singular talent for draining the pockets of well-intentioned investors. Highly leveraged balance sheets and bankruptcies are the norm. Significant labor costs and unpredictable jet fuel prices wreak havoc on variable costs. Yet some airlines generate solid returns quarter after quarter. Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK  ) , Ryanair (NASDAQ: RYAAY  ) , Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) , and Copa Holdings (NYSE: CPA  ) each manage to be consistently profitable. Let's examine a few themes they share in common, and zero in on their individual strategic ideas.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Growing profitably
JetBlue is already one of the largest carriers in the New York area, where it competes heavily with Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) , United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) , and AMR's American Airlines. However, the company has been diversifying its operations, and has become the largest carrier in Boston and San Juan. JetBlue's growth is primarily concentrated in those two markets now.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Today, however, the airline industry got some good news that had nothing to do with that litigation: Delta Air Lines(DAL) is set to join the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index. Now, we all know that an addition to the index is not meant to be a recommendation, but with index funds and index huggers, alike, being forced to buy its shares, Delta’s stock has surged today.

Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) stock rocketed higher by more than 153% in 2013. This made it the biggest gainer in one of the top-performing industry sectors this year, outshining strong performances from Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) and Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) .

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) is estimated to report its Q4 earnings at $0.63 per share on revenue of $9.03 billion.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By El Torero]

The airline will undoubtedly pounce on the likely failings of rival companies, though this is also an area where easyJet will be eager to move in. Spanair is gone as is Malev Zrt, two former Ryanair rivals. Air France-KLM (AFLYY.PK) and Iberia are in trouble, among other European airlines. Ryanair will take advantage of such weaknesses in its aim of becoming Europe's out-and-out dominant short-haul carrier. As other airlines cut routes, airports are now looking to Ryanair to take up the newly available airport space. As a result of this, with "opportunities opening up in Germany, Scandinavia and Central Europe" in particular, Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Howard Millar sees the Irish company increase its market share from 15 percent to 20 percent before the end of the decade.

Wolfe Research’s Hunter Keay and Jared Shojaian think United Continental (UAL) and JetBlue (JBLU) should swap planes. They explain:

    Getty Images

We believe bothUnited Continental and JetBlue have fleet inefficiencies that contribute to poor margins for both airlines. IfUnited Continental acquired JetBlue 60 E-190s (and the 24 on order), in a transaction like the one Delta Air Lines (DAL) andSouthwest Airlines (LUV) announced in 2012 when Southwest Airlines agreed to sublease its 88 B717s to Delta Air Lines, we believe both companies would benefit. This would also represent no incremental capacity to United Continental, by our math…

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Southwest has also stood up to low-cost competitor JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) by coming to an agreement with DISH Network to offer free live television access as well as on-demand shows at no charge. Rather than installing monitors, Southwest will make the entertainment freely available on its Wi-Fi planes, not even charging for Wi-Fi access for passengers who want only to watch the DISH offerings.

Many of these airports are slot-controlled, meaning the government has capped the number of flights that airlines are permitted to schedule, To mitigate delays. These slots are highly sought after. For example, JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) bid $40 million for eight slot-pairs (the rights to operate eight round trips) at Reagan National Airport in late 2011. On peak days, airlines will use every single slot that they own at these popular airports.

Hot Tech Companies To Buy For 2014

Although Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG  ) and Panera Bread (NASDAQ: PNRA  ) have become shorthand for fast casual dining, and are seen as the reason fast food restaurants are fast losing sales, there may be a different culprit at work -- one that, until now, has been surreptitiously siphoning off sales.

According to the market researchers at Technomic, convenience stores have been stealing fast food customers away. A survey of 4,000convenience store shoppers found 26% ended up not hitting up the local burger joint becausethey already picked up something to eat at their local 7-Eleven or Wawa.

Source: Wikipedia

Sure, we've been able to buy Spicy Bites and warmed-up pizza of varying quality from them for years, but the trend toward prepared foods has accelerated lately and, as the Technomic report that was issued in December makes clear, the quality of the foods has dramatically improved, suggesting that fast food restaurants are now fighting a battle on two fronts.

We are attracted to the company large growth opportunity, which is driven by increased sensor penetration in industries such as automobiles and general industrial opportunities. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] things I said was that I knew George Risk's materials cost was higher than some competitors' selling price. The fact that any company could survive under conditions like that immediately suggested that dollars paid for the product was not the key concern for this product.

Perceived costs had to involve other concerns like customization, shipping speed, reliability, etc. Because it was a low cost product going into a higher cost product going into very high cost projects it seemed likely there was the opportunity to raise prices if needed. And that's what they ended up doing. The important clue for me in that investigation was the severe cost disadvantage George Risk had. You couldn compete at such a cost disadvantage unless price was less important than I initially thought.

I think you will find that most of these insights are not available in the financial statements. They come from reading the 10-Ks of all companies in the industry, reading articles about the companies, listening to all conference call transcripts, etc.

For example, there is not much in the financial statements of Carnival (CCL) that explains how the cruise business really works. But all of the companies in the industry (CCL, RCL and NCL) freely discuss the economics of their business in great detail. They break out costs before and after fuel. They give you per-passenger prices of how much newly built ships cost. They give you lots and lots of details. They explain how they price their product (the way airlines do) and so on. There is an extreme level of detailed explanation of the business in the various conference calls, 10-Ks, etc.

A great source for this information is going back to the time the company went public or at least finding the S-1 of a competitor. When a company goes public it often gives much more detail into product economics, etc., than it will later on when it reports annual results.

That is also a good place to learn about market share, com

  • [By Geoff Gannon] ombination of not really cheap on a P/E basis and just barely cheap on a cash basis and it was connected to homebuilding.

I could go on like that. But I not sure I understand why knowing anything about the perceptions of others actually helps my own investment decisions. I also not sure the reasons Ie offered for the cheapness of those stocks are actually the reasons anybody else had for selling the stock, not buying it, etc. In fact, I think those are just plausible reasons I made up.

But that not the problem with wanting to know why a stock is cheap. The problem is how that knowledge or the quest for it directs your attention. And attention is the scarcest resource an investor has.

Once you know what somebody else perception is, you try to either prove or disprove that perception. In essence, I see the problem of thinking about market sentiment of worrying about the Keynesian beauty contest as being like one of those optical illusions. Like the duck-rabbit illusion. In fact, this concern of mine is one of the reasons why Ie suggested investors read Kuhn.

They often talk about some past period like the 1920s or 1950s with a total misunderstanding of what people were looking for in a stock back then. Of how they thought about stocks. Of what they thought stocks were. This isn a misanalysis of the facts. It a misclassification.

When Ben Graham started on Wall Street there was none of this tocks for the Long Runstuff. There was no talk of asset classes. There were investments called bonds. And there were speculations called stocks. And it was heresy when Ben Graham basically said a cheap stock is a better investment than an expensive bond.

You become a bad financial historian when you confuse your own perceptions your own way of classifying stocks and noting the aspects of a stock with how people really thought about stocks back then.

    In the same wa

  • [By Geoff Gannon] n. When it traded around $4.50 (it now more like $7.50 a share) it was a net-net with a good business and a moat. There were risks customer concentration for one and it was no blue chip. There was no diversification of product lines, customers, geography, industry, etc. It was closely tied to U.S. construction activity.

All this means it was no blue chip. Not that it didn have a moat. I felt it did. And certainly not that it wasn a high quality business. It demonstrably was (unleveraged returns on tangible equity were around 30%). And it was a net-net. In fact, it was a net cash stock at one time.

So they do happen. But they are rare. The usual distinction with net-nets is not between companies like that companies which may have a moat, do earn good returns on capital, etc. but between companies that are legitimate and illegitimate businesses.

A legitimate business is in my mind a historically profitable one. It is likely to have positive retained earnings (there are exceptions to this rule but it a good first check). It should have more years of profits (6 or more) than losses in the last 10 years. And it should be self-financing.

Compare this to an illegitimate business. The least legitimate businesses are those that while publicly traded have never turned a profit and can self finance. They may be net-nets but they are net-nets because they have issued stock in the past and then seen their share prices drop. Retained earnings are often negative.

There are other factors to consider. Is the business old or young? Is depreciation and other accounting especially conservative or aggressive? Are taxes especially conservative or aggressive? And is share issuance dilutive or not.

I think a legitimate business tends towards LIFO accounting, quicker depreciation, higher taxes paid as a percentage of reported income, and lower share issuance. There are exceptions. Many

  • [By Hank Coleman]

Anna Subbotina/Shutterstock You may not be fully aware of it, but you're probably sitting on your own personal treasure hoard: a stash of airline miles, hotel points or reward points you've earned through your credit cards. According to statistics compiled by Points.com and its parent Points International (PCOM), a company specializing in helping consumers trade, exchange and redeem reward points, the average American is hoarding more than 61,000 reward points through various programs. Americans have more than 2.65 billion loyalty memberships -- almost 10 per person. This would be fine if we were spending those points -- but we're not. According to Points.com, only 16 percent of us redeem the points that we earn each year. Why do we love reward points? Is there a danger in hoarding them? What should we do with our points as our balances continue to grow? Why Do We Love Reward Points So Much? Getting something for free is a big allure of reward points and loyalty programs. I love that my airline-branded credit card allows me to check a bag for free. Companies view reward programs as marketing by gamification. If businesses can make patronizing them into a game for their customers, they'll be more likely to do what it takes to advance to the next level. And of course, these programs inspire brand loyalty. I'm a huge fan of Fitbit. I'm always striving for the next badge or level with my fitness goals through the site and its devices. I'm also addicted to checking in to the places that I frequent on Foursquare. It drives me crazy when someone ousts me as the mayor of one of my favorite haunts. Gamification is going on with reward points themselves. Companies have found that we desperately want to get to the next level of rewards. That's why companies have different colored credit cards and exclusive levels that offer even more freebies to loyal customers -- though usually for a price. And we are dreamers. We dream that our frequent flyer miles and hotel rew
