Top 10 Telecom Companies To Invest In Right Now

Cia. de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo is close to becoming Latin America biggest utility by market value after a 67 percent surge in the past year spurred by investors trading power stocks for water.

The state-run water company market value rose to a record $11.1 billion at the end of last month, narrowing the gap to generator Tractebel Energia SA (TBLE3) to about $360.7 million, data compiled by Bloomberg show. That down from $1 billion at the end of last year and $3.89 billion at the start of 2012.

Sabesp, already the world largest water utility, is luring investors seeking the safety of utilities as stagnant economic growth and government intervention cause the benchmark Bovespa index to lag behind regional peers. State water companies offer protection because they aren regulated by the federal government, which is clamping down on industries from electricity to banks and telecommunications in a bid to hold down inflation and spur the economy.

Excel became the youngest company to earn a billion dollars annual revenue that year, and was also considered the fourth-largest long-distance carrier by the end of 1996. But the flaws in its business model became too great to ignore as more Americans shifted their calling preferences to mobile phones. Profits plummeted, and after the turn of the century Bell Canada (NYSE: BCE  ) , a major shareholder, acquired full control. Excel became a Bell Canada subsidiary, but was quickly spun off as a new privately held company, only to have this new corporate parent file for bankruptcy in 2004. After emerging from bankruptcy, the former Excel was eventually acquired by another privately held telecom provider. It wasn't the first or the fastest to go big and then go bust, but Excel's story highlights the risks any investor takes in buying up shares based on a very brief history of meteoric growth.

The economy is also expected to recover quickly from the storm's devastation, making Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (NYSE: PHI) more attractive to long-term investors than other communications firms such as BCE (NYSE: BCE), AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ).

BCE (BCE) is the largest telecom operator in Canada … and sports one whopper of a dividend.

As should be no surprise, the traditional wired voice services segment continues to be weak for BCE, and that’s something we can expect in perpetuity. However, BCE has diversified into other businesses, such as broadband, IPTV, satellite television, radio and mobile, which is helping to smooth its transition.

Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade idea is cloud services player J2 Global (JCOM), which is set to release its numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect J2 Global to report revenue $130.43 million on earnings of 71cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for J2 Global is extremely high at 20.6%. That means that out of the 43.70 million shares in the tradable float, 9.01 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of JCOM could easily explode higher post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, JCOM is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares moving higher from its low of $38.07 to its recent high of $56.24 a share. During that uptrend, shares of JCOM have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of JCOM within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're in the bull camp on JCOM, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 52-week high at $56.42 a share (or Tuesday's intraday high if higher) on high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 292,457 shares. If that breakout hits, then JCOM will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $65 to $75 a share.

I would simply avoid JCOM or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops below some key near-term support levels at $54 to $53 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then JCOM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its ne

Telecom giants AT&T (NYSE: T  ) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) have both posted gains of about 1.5%. Speculation about international expansion has raised interest in both companies lately, as Verizon is reportedly looking northward at a potential acquisition of Canada's Wind Mobile, while AT&T yesterday spurred rumors that it might seek to buy Spain's Telefonica. Of the two, Verizon's Canadian buyout would be much less complicated: The relatively small size of Wind Mobile makes an acquisition quite manageable. Both ideas make it clear, though, that opportunities in the U.S. market are starting to reach a saturation point, forcing the American giants to look elsewhere for growth.

The U.S. telecom space has generated more than its share of headlines over the last 12 months amid a wave of massive mergers. And, while that's been plenty exciting in this usually dull space, the real competition might just be getting started. With plenty of fresh capital and spectrum to boot,Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) is taking dead aim at the two largest incumbents in in this space --AT&T (NYSE: T  ) andVerizon (NYSE: VZ  ) , much to consumers' delight. So what's Sprint's master plan? In this video, Fool contributor Andrew Tonner talks about how Sprint could quickly change the game in the U.S. telecom space.

I know that I would need several stocks with steady and reliable high yields. Verizon (VZ) fits this mold perfectly and I believe it to be the best in breed choice among wireless communications companies. VZ has been on an upward trend throughout the second half of 2012 and the early part of 2013. Because of this I set a $42 entry point (I felt this to be fair value for the company) and managed to pick up shares of VZ on January 15th, 2013 just under this target price. VZ's 4.13% yield is currently the highest in my portfolio. VZ has shown steady and reliable dividend growth and I don't expect for this to change. The company is constantly improving and increasing its infrastructure (fiber-optic, land line, and wireless). VZ services nearly 100 million retail customers in the US. I see the telecommunications industry as an indirect play on the smartphone market as well. The mobile technology sector is cut throat and unpredictable; therefore, I like the idea of gaining exposure through the providers rather than the hardware manufacturers. Verizon's moat extends further than that of a purely wireless provider. The company maintains an advanced fiber-optic network enabling it to venture into integrated business solutions. According to the company's website VZ offers these services to customers in more than 150 countries. This international exposure gives the company expansive room for growth.

This acquisition of GTP will add another 5,400 or so domestic towers and 800 domestic property interests under third-party communications sites. GTP also has management rights to more than 9,000 domestic sites. On top of the $3.3 billion purchase price will be another $1.5 billion in debt. Keep in mind that American Tower agreed to an $800 million deal over the summer with NII Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: NIHD) to purchase somewhere around 4,500 sites in Brazil and Mexico.

NIIHoldings Inc. (NASDAQ: NIHD)is trading as though the worst case scenario is headed its way. This is effective Nextel international, and the closure of its communications sites in Mexico sale did not seem to help matters. That call from a week earlier where HSBC abandoned ship after NII reported a wider loss, predicting that the stock would now go to $2.00 per share, is looking like that could be possible. This one fell another 8.6% to $2.63 on Friday on about 200% of normal volume, and the stock put in a new low over the last decade or so of $2.60 with wide losses expected in 2013 and 2014 on declining sales.
