Top 5 Companies To Buy For 2014

NEW YORK Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek says fans of the popular Swedish-based global streaming service spent 4 陆 billion hours listening to music on the service in 2013. Unless those people happened to be premium subscribers forking over $10 a month, they weren't listening on their smartphones.

On Wednesday Spotify unveiled a new ad-based service for mobile users that will permit those folks to access to Spotify's 20+million song catalog for free. And in a major coup for Spotify, that catalog will now include the works of Led Zeppelin, the legendary band that until this deal had withheld its music from streaming services.

As part of the new mobile offering, you'll be able to stream the playlists that you created on Spotify or the playlists from other users that you follow, on your phone. You can also discover new music, or dive into a favorite performer's entire back catalog, without the kind of restrictions that would only let you listen to a track from that artist once every 20 minutes or so.

    The Foolish bottom line
Despite soft copper and gold prices, along with a general lack of enthusiasm about its pending acquisitions -- which are expected to close during the current quarter -- 47% of the analysts who follow Freeport McMoRan rate the company at least a buy. This compares with 87% of the analysts who follow its Phoenix-based neighbor Southern Copper (NYSE: SCCO  ) who rate that company no better than a hold.

Finally, Fisher Asset Management's biggest closed positions included Naspersand Brinker International. Other closed positions of interest include Southern Copper (NYSE: SCCO  ) , which has been whacked by falling copper prices and a slowdown in China as it reported first-quarter net profits down 20%. It's planning to nearly double its production over the next few years, and has been taking on a lot more debt as it invests in infrastructure. The stock recently yielded 2.9% and seems fairly valued. The company may shut a Peruvian foundry and refinery due to pollution-control regulations, though, which could hurt its results.

And like other big tech companies, Google is looking hard at the living room. It is said to be working on Android TV, which will be a set-top box that streams Internet content like Apple TV or the Amazon Fire TV. A big part of the fight over the digital living room will be gaming, however. Just last month Google bought game controller maker Green Throttle games. Future acquisitions could focus on more hardware, such as console maker Ouya, or one or more game developers.

Robots: Google loves robots; it bought eight robotics companies last fall alone. If Google decides it needs still more robotics companies, some of the more prominent possibilities are iRobot Corp. (Nasdaq: IRBT), Rethink Robotics, and Honda Motor Corp.'s (NYSE ADR: HMC) robotics division. Search and Cloud Services: This category is much closer to Google's roots. Google is doing a lot of work on "semantic search," which is a way of using artificial intelligence to deliver more accurate and more intuitive search results based on the context of the each term. Google just bought artificial intelligence company DeepMind Technologies in January. The AngelList has 113 semantic search startups on its website; several of these probably are already on Google's shopping list.

To enrich the mobile searches of Android users, Google may also look at companies such as Yelp Inc. (NYSE: YELP), Foursquare, or even music streaming service Pandora Media (NYSE: P).
